NXT Recap 22/5/19

Content 3 days in a row from yours truly, well ahead of my college tasks for the week so able to get involved in some wrestling. Whatever the weather though, you know I am here for you when it comes to N-X-T. (Except that week after Wrestlemania, or the one before New Years).

I have also compiled a Stars of the Week league table, which I will include at the bottom of this article.

We begin with a recap of the tag team turmoil from last week followed by an announcement from Mr Regal. In 2 weeks at NXT Takeover it will be a fatal 4 way ladder match. The Street Profits vs Forgotten Sons vs 1s and 2s vs reDRagon (Fish and O’Reilly). Well guess that was the War Raiders being written off NXT, by beating up half the teams…Ok. The match should be good though. Nice to see Fish and O’Reilly in there. Could that be the start of the Undisputed Era’s Gold Rush…..?

Speaking of the Undisputed Era. Here they come. Adam Cole reiterates that they are on the same page and they own NXT. Soon they will be draped in Championship gold. Cole says Fish and O’Reilly will regain the Tag Championships and Kyle plays imaginary air belt. Brilliant. He then starts running down Gargano and that brings Johnny to the stage.

Kyle playing imaginary air belt is as good as Kyle playing air belt.

Johnny says Cole is celebrating his boys are back only because he can’t beat him on his own.

Cole calls a Zack Morris style Timeout and they get into a back and forth about the validity of winning the first fall in a 2 out of 3 falls match. Johnny then leads a maths lesson about how 2 is more than 1. Cole does not find it funny.

Matt Riddle attacks the Era from behind, Johnny runs into help them and Cole and Riddle clear the ring. Officials hold them apart.

Out first is Sean Maluta. He’s usually enhancement talent. He’s up against Mansoor. Who is also usually enhancement talent…..Mansoor is the more recent enhancement talent so I’m going to pick him for the win. Mansoor has been good. Should be fun.

Mansoor vs Sean Maluta

Maluta in control early, Samoan drop, corner kick and then comes off the top and hits a sort of cutter type move. Mansoor hits a slingshot neckbreaker and his finish, which was a spinning suplex and gets the win. Bit quick for my liking was hoping they’d have more of a match. Nice couple of moves at the end for Mansoor.

Slingshot Neckbreaker was nice in this quick match.

Cathy is backstage at Regal’s door and you can hear him screaming at someone. The door opens and the era walk out as Cole says Bobby and Kyle can take care of it.

Regal calms down and tells Cathy that Riddle will face Strong at Takeover and O’Reilly and Fish will face Gargano and Riddle tonight. Fan-bloody-tastic.

Next the Dream is live. Should find out who will be his opponent for Take-over. Keith Lee? Kushida? Jason Ryker?

Here he comes anyway. The cuffs and ruffles on his shirt are exuberant, but why does he have a rope hanging off his jacket?

What's up with this rope? I prefer Aaliyah's backpack

He rambles on as he does only to be interrupted by NXT’s favorite son. Tyler Breeze. Tyler has had a haircut. He says Prince Pretty is home. Breeze insinuates that Dream is a cheap knockoff of Prince Pretty. Dream welcomes Breeze back to the Dreams NXT. He cuts Tyler down, calling him a boy who plays cops and robbers who wouldn’t cut it on Monday or Tuesday. He tells him to run along.

Looking sharp Tyler

Tyler says he’s inspired by the North American champion and the title. Dream says the line starts outside but he will pose for a selfie with Tyler. Tyler poses, and gives the line of the night ‘When you write your number on your trunks, and nobody calls you up, it’s because no-one is interested’. Then clocks him with his phone.

Loved the reference to the ‘Call me up Vince’ trunks, Dream wore at a previous takeover.

Tyler is backstage with Cathy Kelley. He says he ‘just wanted to introduce Velveteen Dream to an inspired Prince Pretty’

Out comes Candace LeRae. She is taking on Reina Gonzalez. Complete with cowbell.

Candace LeRae vs Reina Gonzalez

Gonzalez with the size advantage. Hits a big spinning powerslam early doors. Candace avoids her in the corner and hits an arm DDT. Candace caught going for a springboard crossbody and runs Gonzalez into the steps. Headscissors off the top rope from Candace who hits a flurry of strikes. Missile dropkick from the top. Then hits the middle rope moonsault for the win. Candace continues to build momentum, but the horsewomen come down to beat her up. Io and a kendo stick comes to the wring and she goes to town on the horsewomen. Battering all three of them.

Io going to town with that Kendo stick.

Dream vs Breeze announced for Take-over to round out the card. No Kushida. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him on the pre-show. Get him in front of that crowd.

Next week Belair vs Yim and Kushida vs Gulak. Decent start to next week!

Main event time

Matt Riddle and Johnny Gargano vs Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish

My favorite wrestler, my favorite tag team and the leader in Stars of the week . Probably enjoy this.

Slick grappling from Gargano and O’Reilly to start, eventually Kyle gets upper hand and takes Gargano to the corner and Fish is in. Fish distracts Riddle in the corner and Kyle attacks him, but Riddle moves and boots Riddle. Fish then attacks Riddle but gets caught with a kick from Gargano and GarganBro are in control.

Johnny holds Fish whilst Rids goes to town on his chest with palm strikes, then a flurry of kicks in the corner, forearm to Kyle, then two to Bobby, exploder suplex on Bobby, Kyle in again, Pele kick. Bobby gets a couple of shots in before being caught in the multiple gut wrench duplexes. Riddle avoids another O’Reilly attack and now the gut wrenches on Kyle.

2 brilliant Kyle O'Reilly facial expressions this week.

Riddle’s ribs give out on him from the attack by Strong last week. Bobby and Kyle selling the gutwrenches was brilliant. Fish and Kyle now work on Riddle in their corner. Cutting the ring in half. Using their years of tag team experience and the momentum of Riddle’s offensive flurry has well and truly been halted. Plenty of work on the injured ribs from the Era. Fish just clubbing Riddle in the ribs. Then knees. Slingshot senton. Just systematical from Fish. All over the ribs.

Kyle in with a modified abdominal stretch. Continuing to work on the midsection. Riddle fights back in a strike exchange, then a number of reversals before Riddle nails the ripcord knee. Both men are down and make it to the corner for tags. Here comes Bobby and Johnny. Johnny fresh and on fire taking out both the Era. Enziguri, Tornado DDT combo for a near fall. Kyle with the blind tag and CHASING THE DRAGON. 1-2-NOOOOO.

CHASING THE DRAGON

Everyone in as it breaks down. Riddle and Kyle with a German exchange ends with a Riddle PK on Kyle and everyone is down again. Superekick, Broton combo from Riddle and Johnny, then a Moonsault.- The floating Bro. Kyle breaks up the pinfall at the last minute.

Gargano lawn darts Kyle into a Riddle knee. That was bloody excellent.

I loved this. The Riddle knee with added lawn dart. Fan-bloody-tastic.

Bobby saves Kyle, but gets hit with a power bomb and another knee from Rids. This time Kyle pulls Bobby out at the last minute. Great stuff. Riddle volleys O’Reilly from the apron. Suddenly Adam Cole is out, Johnny meets him on the ramp with a tope. Strong attacks Riddle whilst the ref is distracted. High and Low from reDRagon and the Era get the win.

Very good match.

Numbers game was too much for Riddle and Gargano in the end. Post match beatdown from the Undisputed Era. Last shot to the back of the head of Gargano.

Good show, Fantastic main worth checking out. Couple of nice wins for Mansoor and Candace to up their stock and Tyler coming home to stake a claim.
