NXT Recap 1/5/19

Wrestling is coming thick and fast for me at the moment. Last week I went to Attack, International Wrestling League and the Pro Wrestling Eve hosted Kris Wolf retirement show. All good shows, but I especially recommend checking out Kris’s show which was a concept piece of matches relating to her life. So so good. It’s hard to describe but very much worth watching. This weekend we have Progress’s 3-day tournament, Super Strong Style with a Kaiju Big Battle show in there for good measure and next weekend is Rev Pro - Epic Encounter and Pro Wrestling Eve’s, I believe 9-year anniversary show. So, lots of live wrestling for me to get to in the London area.

However, I still have the time for some TV wrestling, working my way through Stardom’s Cinderella tournament as it’s added and I always have time for my friends of NXT. I believe tonight is hyped around the in-ring debut of Kushida against Kassius Ohno, that should be fun. I can’t remember what else has been promised, but it should be decent as usual.

Let’s go

Ey-oh. Here come the 1’s and 2’s for a 6-man match. Presumably with Humberto against the Forgotten Sons. Yep

Humberto Carrillo and The 1s and 2s vs The Forgotten Sons

Lorcan in control early hitting a dive (Pescara?) to the outside taking out all three Sons.

Oney on the charge

Carillo hits a Son with a big arm drag, but a blind tag was made by Ryker who hits a huge spine buster allowing the Sons to take the initiative as the three of them isolate Carrillo. Carrillo walks up the ropes to escape a cobra clutch and gets a Hot Tag to Burch. Suddenly it’s all broken down. But the sons move out the way of a tope suicido and Carrillo hits Burch. Danny left 1 on 3 in the ring. He starts off on top, but the numbers get the better of him. Carrillo flies in to save but gets swatted out of the air by Ryker. Powerbombs into the knees on Burch and Carrillo. Then Ryker holds them both for a double neck breaker as Cutler and Blake hit almost stereo stomps off the ropes for the pin.

Triple team finisher!

Couple of breakdown’s from the new team and the unity of the Sons proving to be the difference.

Cathy is outside earlier with Shayna and the gang - She has no remorse for attacking Kairi and

Io, but when Cathy brings up the fact Io has Pinned her and she hasn’t pinned Io, Shayna pauses, stares and smashed the microphone out of her hand. Then walks off. Beautiful from Shayna.

At the PC - Bianca and Mia Yim confrontation. Bianca tells Mia to keep her name out of her mouth. Robbie Brookside says ‘What are you doing’ a lot.

A follow up from last week when Mia said Bianca wasn’t Un-Der-Fea-Ted. It’s set up a match for next week.

I wonder what the order is they do these things. As they tape in advance, do they have the match, then Mia cuts a promo sowing seeds for a match, then they film an angle to promote said match? Or have they filmed the stuff a long time in advance in chronological order? I’d guess at the former.

Dominik Dijakovic vs Mansoor

I am predicting a win for Dijakovic here. He’s called out Dream and looks to be on his way to a North American title match.

Dijakovic tries to finish the match straight away with the cyclone kick away, but Mansoor uses his pace to avoid it. Mansoor gets a bit of early offence in, using quickness to avoid Dijakovic strikes and hitting some quick hits of his own. He comes off the top and Dijakovic catches him. Then knees him in the stomach whilst still holding him. THEN HE LITERALLY THROWS HIM OVER THE TOP ROPE INTO THE BARRICADE. Bloody Hell Dom.

'GET OUTTA MY RING' (imagine in a Peggy Mitchell voice)

Back in the ring. Aggressive vertical suplex, Manor kicks out, showing some heart. Mansoor fight back and the crowd massively behind him. Mansoor balances on Dijakovic’s knee and hits a step-up kick, that was great.

Great step-up Kick from Mansoor

Dijakovic big kick as Mansoor comes off the ropes. Then hits a beautiful Feast Your Eyes. Kneeing him half way across the ring to pick up the victory.

Really good match. Looked like it was going to be a complete squash, but Mansoor showed heart and then got a second wind of offence before Dijakovic finished the job. That was a lot of fun.

Oh, here we go. Here comes Velveteen Dream on his couch.

I am struggling to put into words what I just saw. Dream has re-written the National Anthem, taking shots at Riddle, Murphy and Dijakovic. The lyrics came up behind him and the crowd sang along. It was a clever song; however, Dream is an awful singer. He then tells Dijakovic it’s Dream Over.

This guy!

More to come from these two.

Next week - Matt Riddle vs Adam Cole is the main event.

Era Promo - All seems fine, until Cole makes what he calls ‘a joke’ about Roddy dropping the ball last week. Roddy leaves. Bobby sides with Roddy and also leaves. Kyle agrees with Cole and stays. FRACTION FACTION!

Here comes NXTUK’s own Kassius Ohno

Kassius Ohno vs Kushida

Kushida gets a pretty big-time entrance with smoke effects. There is room in the smoke budget now Ally Black has been promoted. Big Kushida chant. F.R.G doesn’t seem too impressed, not does Ohno. Kushida offers his hand but Ohno kicks it away.

Big dropkick!

Kushida outwrestles Ohno on the mat. Transitions galore. Ohno catches a standing moonsault into a cravat. Lovely. Then a standoff. Ohno now offers his hand and tells him ‘You’re good’. He turns the handshake into a big boot to the face. Ohno you Villain! Ohno in control with strikes, Kushida has a bloodied nose. Kushida reverses in the ropes, dropkick to the arm, before Ohno catches him going for a roundhouse and hits a face buster for a near fall. Excellent sequence. Ohno tells Kushida ‘You don’t belong here’. Springboard Rana gets a near fall for Kushida. Kushida drops Ohno to his knee with a kick and picks up the limp arm of Ohno and mockingly shakes his hand. Handspring elbow from Kushida straight into an elbow to the back of the head by Ohno for long 2.

I believe the term is 'well scouted'

Ohno with big boot off the ropes, Kushida with a wind-up punch. Drops Ohno. PK to the arm, Hoverboard Lock. Ohno taps, Kushida leaves it on for a little bit of extras.

Cracking match that. Full of counters and reversals. Very good.

Stars of the Week

1. Kushida - Cracking debut to introduce him to a new audience

2. Kassius Ohno - The Gatekeeper making people look good once again

3. Dominick Dijakovic - Some more great examples of power and agility from the Big Man

Humberto Carrillo award

Mansoor - Great showing from Mansoor who I remember seeing a while back, pretty sure he got more of an outing here and showed heart and some offensive ability.
