NERD WATCH WEDNESDAY (16/01/2019)

Writer's picture: WSBFWSBF

This week, Shafi was in charge of choosing a match for the nerd group to watch together and he went for the least bought big five WWE PPV pre network - Survivor Series 95.

However, it is a hidden classic 8 man woman match!

Aja Kong, Bertha Faye, Lioness Asuka & Tomoko Watanabe (w/Harvey Wippleman) vs. Alundra Blayze, Chaparita Asari, Kyoko Inoue & Sakie Hasegawa

Let's tuck in!

Pete - 8pm still?

Muhammad - Yes from me

Dom - Yep

Pete - Cool

Dom - What’s the match there Shafi? Got it loaded up on the network for us?

Simon - I’m good for 8

Muhammad - I don't know what that means?

Dom - Sorry. I’ll talk like an adult

Muhammad - Lol it's OK I just didn't know if I was supposed to send you a link or something

Dom - Nah. I’m just excited to make sure I find it OK.

Pete - Nah just give us the time stamp

Dom - Haha

Muhammad - I think you will like my pick, cos you like strong style, and you like women's wrestling

Pete - Is it ‘that’ Jackie Gayda match

Muhammad - And I doubt that everyone has seen this match

Dom - This is a great build. I’m buzzing

Muhammad - The event is survivor series 95, time stamp is 28:52. Gonna go eat, I will see you guys at 8pm for something a little bit different

James - The only disappointing thing about this build is it's almost guaranteed to have no Mr Ass in it. The positive thing is it's almost guaranteed to have no Undertaker in it.

Pete - I'm loaded up

Simon - Mine never lets me pause

Dom - I’m good to go, I think. Paused on Owen and dean Douglas backstage?

James - Yeah I'm ready as well. Possibly a second ahead Of Dom

Dom - You love being a second ahead and stealing all my zingers

James – Haha!

Muhammad - I'm ready

Simon - I’m ready

Muhammad – 3, 2, 1 Go!

James - And we're off

Pete - Awesome I'm excited for this one

Muhammad - Jobber entrance to begin

James - Harvey Wippleman. Brilliant

Simon - Gotta admit. I do not know the build up to this match

Dom - Awesome stuff. I didn’t peek what the match was so popped when it was this. Ring announcer probably butchered that but I wouldn’t know any better.

Pete - I think Vince cared so little for women's wrestling at this point that they ended up having a solid women's division for a hot minute, the best they’d had until NXT/the Revolution started

James - Aja Kong is in it. Wow

Pete - Title was defended outside the company at points

Muhammad - Someone give me a time stamp

Pete - There is some serious talent in this match

James - She's 25 here. I saw her in 2018. Must have been 44

Pete - 31:10

Muhammad - Cheers

James - Big Giant Swing

Dom - Holy shit. Just drills her with a spinning heel kick

Pete - Chaparita Asari innovated the corkscrew moonsault

Simon - Cesaro swing!

Muhammad - She killed her

Simon - Was that even a kick out

Pete - Joshi Bridge!

James - There it is Pete

Muhammad - What a fucking move. In 1995 WWF!

Pete - If it wasn't obvious Lioness Asuka was the namesake for Kana's WWE name

James - Well she's not lasted long

Dom - She almost went 540 with the corkscrew.

Pete - The work is so good here - but the eliminations are fast as hell

Simon - Can’t blink in this one

James - Suplex City

Simon - 5 in a row

Pete - Just wrecking her with tiger suplexes

Dom - Perfect chips in with some Casual sexism

James - 'These women should be at home making their old man something to eat'. It's alright though. It's the 90s before sexism was bad

Dom - #gillette

Pete - If you haven't seen the Aja Kong vs Chapparita Asari match I highly recommend it. It's one of the best squashes ever and all Vince does is talk about HBK.

Muhammad - The Spanish commentators are loving it

Pete - Aja still looks much the same today. Impressive

Dom - Back drop driver! Dangerous!!!

Muhammad - Jeez what a back suplex

Simon - Nearly killed her

Pete - Loved that no sell. Oh, Jesus that splash, she beat Viper with that last year

Muhammad - Proper splash

Simon - Nice tag there

Dom - National spokesman for orange juice in Japan! Well she just got squeezed

Muhammad - This match would be even better if only JR was on commentary

James - I couldn't remember what she beat Viper with, it was after a day of SSS and a York Hall show in one

Simon - Bah gawd

Muhammad - Ultimate warrior kicked out!

Pete - She went up to the top rope at least Admittedly my memory is hazy too

Muhammad - Harvey Wippleman was great

Dom - At least you boys made it there. I had a ticket and tapped out early.

Muhammad - Mike Chioda rocking that OG mullet

Simon - Wasn’t that a 3 count?

Muhammad - The ref has no idea what's going on

James - 3 count but Blayze says no. That's the equivalent of walking on an L.B.W

Pete - Piledriverrrrr!!!!! Definitely some miscommunication

Simon - Don’t think the ref can keep up. “You don’t know what you’re doing”

Pete - I'd like to see one of the current women bring back the piledriver

Muhammad - He's worse than Roberts

Dom - Bertha Faye! What. An. Athlete.

Pete - Rate the German Suplex as a finisher

James - Bertha Faye the least annoyed at getting pinned ever. Just rolled out with no expression

Pete - Flair bump!

James - Cared less than Deandre Jordan on defence

Muhammad - Good finisher except when you drop Bertha on your own head

Pete - Blayze/Madusa was badass. After wrestling she became a fucking monster truck driver

which is the coolest thing ever

Simon - Crowd in view of the camera look dead

Dom - The ECW sunglasses fan is in the front row

Pete - Standing moonsault there

James - The crowd are wishing it was 2015 and they could be on their phones

Simon - Hahahaha

Dom – “She got herrrr...NO!” Vince was bloody great. I’m so nostalgic hearing that.

Muhammad - They don't know what their watching

James - The commentary is a bag of wank

Muhammad - They are yearning for Mantaur

Pete - It's funny because they're probably working at a higher level to the rest of the show minus Owen, Bret and HBK

Muhammad - 100%

Pete - That's gotta be it! Spinning backfist

Muhammad - Wow that was brutal. Punched her right in the face

Simon - Ouch

James - Perfect is obviously the inspiration for Jerry Lawler, JR says 'top star in Japan', and Vince is just confused, maybe he's in his own headset

Pete - It has a cool name in Japanese as well which I can't spell sadly. It's part of her twitter handle I think

Dom - Surely this generic Japanese music is dubbed. It’s not what they used for her back then? It’s the same for everyone from that era!

James - Awesome finish

Simon - I’m sure I’ve heard this before

James - Bill Clinton!

Dom - Eddie Kingston calls it “backfist to the future.

Pete - I want to see Mike Tyson vs Kong too

Simon - Bill Clinton WTF

Dom - Holy Mac! Slick Willy

James - Is that what started the RD Evans future gimmick in Chikara?

Dom - “Bam Bam since he was a little boy playing with Pebbles.”

Muhammad - Wait for the bang

Pete – Oh, wow Expect to see Trump at Great Balls of Fire next year? Did Bam Bam just kill the President?

Simon - What the hell just happened?

NERD WATCH RATINGS

Muhammad - That match was so far ahead of its time for WWF. If they had twice as much time and the ref knew what the score was it could have been something great. Still a good, fun 10 minute match, I'd probably give it a 7 now but a 9 in 1995.

Pete - I quite enjoyed this. Some miscommunication but there was some awesome work and spots from the Joshi wrestlers and Alundra had a good performance too. It's still so weird that you had this decent division for a bit in the 90s and then Vince let it all be thrown in the can, literally. Imagine if they'd kept going with this style. I'm also giving it a 7.

James - Well that match was pretty good. Eliminations were a bit rushed and you didn't really get to see enough of people. I think a name graphic could have been useful. Commentators were rubbish. Nearly as bad as JR on New Japan. Do some bloody research and give them a chance.

Dom - That was bloody awesome. All it would take was to watch the rest of the show to see how special that really was in this promotion at that time, I think. Probably unfair to score it like you would a match from now. So as far as a sprint from 1995 goes, I’m just giving it a Bertha Faye sized thumbs up because I loved it. Thanks, Shafi.

Simon - It was the first time I’ve viewed this match and it was quite entertaining and fast. It Good showing by Alundra Blayze and co. Shame the crowd at the front didn’t know what was going on! 7/10. Great pick indeed

OVERALL NERD PICK - 7/10
