How did you join the group?
Ross and Lee Wezz had a spare for PROGRESS Chapter 22: Trust, Encouragement, Reward, Loyalty, Satisfaction at The Electric Ballroom in October 2015, and despite the first half of that show, I’m still here!
What is your trademark?
A. I am The Chant Police. You have a chant? Run it by me first and you’ll either get an unlikely thumbs up, or the dreaded, and inevitably more frequent, thumbs down.
B. Incessant positivity obviously.
Which is your favourite promotion?
Without a shadow of a doubt, I have to say NXT. The new live shows are hopefully just going to be an extension of what they already do well: great in-ring, good long-term booking, all culminating in the ridiculously high-standard Takeovers.
Funniest Nerd Group moment?
This is easy. Progress Super Strong Style 16 2017, Night 2 at Electric Ballroom. Jinny vs Toni Storm vs Laura Di Matteo (Booooo) for the NPS and Progress Women’s titles, the action spills to the stage. James, in the early stages of his obsession with women’s wrestling is eager to see what’s happening, attempts to run up the stairs to see, only for the stairs to turn heel and give him a solid Russian Leg Sweep, leaving poor James bleeding. And he missed the spot.
If you could add anyone to the group who would it be?
Nobody. I’d probably remove people…
What is your favourite venue?
I’m sure a lot agree here, but it would have to be the Electric Ballroom. Just big enough to feel like a big deal, just small enough to keep it feeling intimate. And the bar is right behind us.
If you could add a rule to the shot round what would it be?
James does shots every time he moans about how many shot rounds he’s lost…
Create the perfect nerd group member from the group’s attributes
Ross’ positivity and Shafi’s negativity, Pete’s ability to remember everything (even things he’s never seen), Dom’s keenness to get everyone involved, Rob’s ability to hate and enjoy something at the same time, James’ passion for what he likes, Simon and Daniel’s drinking capacity (not their ability to hold it together though), Mat C’s arms, Matt’s love of obscure wrestlers, The Wezz brothers’ invisibility and Jake’s inability to pick who is going to win a wrestling match.
Who would win the nerd group rumble and how?
Simon would hide under the ring until the end and throw out Dom from behind.
Hopes and fears for nerd group 2020?
I hope we all continue to get together, watch great wrestling and enjoy it.
I fear the group gets any bigger, as it’s already unwieldy having Matt, Matt and Mat.
