Fantasy Nerd League

Writer's picture: WSBFWSBF

So you know that we like to create games around the wrestling with the shot round, but we also have our Fantasy Nerd League which allows me to keep track of the weekly wrestling shows that interest me AND win me money!

WHAT IS IT?

It's an annual fantasy prediction league where you pick the winner of matches throughout the year as well as predicting the outcome of tournaments such as the G1 Climax, 16 Carat Gold and Super Strong Style 16.

THE RULES

- Everyone pays £20 for the start of the year to enter.

- We pick the winners for matches of select weekly events throughout the year, with every WWE Network PPV and a few other promotions throughout 2018.

- Each show you can pick a captain, similar to fantasy football. That wrestler scores you double points if he wins.

- If a match is changed or cancelled those picks are null and void.

- Points are totalled at the end of each month and the monthly victor wins a slice of the prize money.

- Points are combined at the end of the year with the overall 2018 winner claiming a super special prize bundle of their favourite wrestler.

HOW DO YOU KEEP TRACK OF SCORES?

I post the match cards into the private Facebook group and then use Microsoft Excel to keep tabs of the scores using formulas of course - can't have human error costing someone the gold!

WHAT'S THE MOST FUN PART?

- You have to think with a booking head. James has been brilliant since he stopped religiously picking his favourite wrestlers.

- You get to understand who is being pushed in different promotions.

- You can be far more invested in matches that you otherwise wouldn't.

- Rob uses fantastic puns when picking his wrestlers.

- Jake rounds up his favourites into those that wear masks and the Ishi brothers.

- It sorts out the faces and heels - we have those that tactically pick according to others.

- I get to source WCW title holders for all points updates.

- The threads that follow points updates result in some great back and forth. Rob's 'Haha Jake you thick prick' currently is my most memorable quip.

THE POWER OF THE LEFT HAND SIDE

For those that forget to post their picks or just can't be arsed (looking at you Lee) you get the left hand pick rule. Surprisingly this has been a very fruitful rule change as several nerds who genuinely pick sometimes lose to the power of the left as they tend to be title holders and favourites.

HOW DO I JOIN?

Entry is only available at the start of the year and we have a history of new nerds wanting to play but having to sit tight. James had to wait 11 months to enter last year, but it was clearly worth it as he has won two of the last three months and currently has a very modest lead in the overall table.
