We all watch an array of wrestling promotions, both current and defunct - but which are our favourites?
Let's find out!
ROSS CASEY - PROGRESS WRESTLING
Much has been written about PROGRESS wrestling from their incredible rise to prominence to their buyout from WWE to Jim Smallman leaving the company to the ultimate statement that BritWres is dead.
I'm not going to go into too much of that here other than to say it was a genuine blessing to witness the 'glory years' from a creative and in-ring standpoint. Do I miss those days? Sure. But do I still head to The Ballroom monthly excited to see the show? Hell yes.
I meet the lads in The Mixer pre-show, catching up on the latest football chat whilst Dom double parks and Pete updates us on the latest news from Reddit. I am greeted at my arrival with warm smiles and hugs and reminisce about Carlson as that stinky pub dog sits with us needing petting.
Then we head to the Ballroom for bell time and camp ourselves in our usual corner spot by the bar, sort out our rounds and watch the opening match fairly sober before steadily getting more and more inebriated, chanting for our favourites (getting a thumb up or down from the chant police) and boo the heels.
As part of the ultras and we feel part of the show. We employ shot round rules for tag matches and suddenly we become incredibly invested in the match as a pinfall on your wrestler can suddenly cost you £20 on shots for the boys.
The first half comes to an end and we discuss the show so far back at The Mixer, whilst Dom grabs someone for a Mixer Minute for our instagram page. Heated discussion happens about the wrestlers, the crowd and why we are watching Monchengladbach vs Dusseldorf on the big screen and not Super Sunday. We always cut it fine and head back just as the first match of the second half is starting.
The second half of the show always seems to fly by as the matches tend to be a better quality and and the alcohol is kicking in, before the almost always delivering main event leaves us applauding long after the bout.
We trickle out, drunkenly congratulating the wrestlers at the merch table before even more drunkenly chat for hours about wrestling, puns and other bullshit on a merry pub crawl of Camden.
We all call it quits at varying points throughout the night, saying farewell to eachother knowing we will shortly be chatting in the PROGRESS facebook group anyhow - or defending eachother on the PROGRESS fans page.
We are a band of brothers. Misfits brought together in the name of PROGRESS. And I thank my lucky stars that I have them. Cheers lads.
