30 Day Wrestling Challenge - Day 22 Future Star

Writer's picture: WSBFWSBF

Matt Brummitt believes that a future star of wrestling is NXT UK's A-Kid. Get to know more about the 23 year-old Spaniard in this latest WSBF 30 day challenge piece...

BRUM - A-KID

I want to preface my submission to clarify that by Future Star, I don't necessarily mean that this guy will main event Wrestlemania or make a shit action film.

I'm not saying he won't either, I just don't care about that stuff. My future star is someone who has the potential to be the best wrestler in the world. My future star is A-Kid.

For anyone not familiar with A-Kid, he's a Spanish wrestling prodigy, currently signed with NXT UK. Despite already having an impressive CV, he just turned 23 yesterday.

Even in his tender years, he is gorgeous in the ring. His style is a hybrid between European catch wrestling, MMA striking, and fancy Lucha stuff.

But most importantly, it doesn't feel like 3 different styles; he meshes it together to give it cohesion, fluidity, and purpose. Rather than 3 disparate styles, together it feels like "A-Kid-Style".

Most people's knowledge of A-Kid comes from the absolute banger he had with Zack Sabre Jr in White Wolf, his home promotion in Madrid (Appendix 1).

This is how I first came across him and I was mesmerised from Day 1. I wasn't the only one. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (sorry, James) heralded it too, making A-Kid the youngest ever wrestler to compete in a WON 5 star match, at the ludicrously young age of 20.

I'm a ZSJ fan boy so this match caters to me. Great mat wrestling and fierce strikes all in the context of a good story makes this a must watch for anybody though.

However, boiling down A-Kid to a one match pony is as wide off the mark as a Shane McMahon punch. The young lad is having crackers all over the place. A year after the ZSJ classic, White Wolf hosted A-Kid vs Ospreay in another stone cold banger (Appendix 2), totally different in style to the Zack match but another must-watch encounter.

If the ZSJ and Ospreay matches put A-Kid and White Wolf on the map, the one that first got them both in the thoughts of the cartographic society was A-Kid's match with Ricochet at the start of 2017 (Appendix 3) over 14 months before the A-Kid vs Sabre.

This match is much more focused on A-Kid's aerial abilities & speed so fans of Ricochet and Ospreay's BOSJ clashes of yore will definitely have their giblets tickled by this. However, we do already see the seeds of the well rounded wrestle-machine that A-Kid will become later.

Finally, I talked about A-Kid's MMA background earlier but if you want to witness it in its purest form, I would recommend him vs David Starr at Tetsujin is Dead (Appendix 4).

Tetsujin is a KO/submission only promotion so you will not see many bells or whistles here. This is a very physical contest but also highlights A-Kid's ability to convey emotion in a match.

The future for A-Kid is mouth watering. He has already briefly crossed paths with Tyler Bate in NXT UK, but the prospect of them having a longer form match down the line is an exciting prospect.

A-Kid's best appearance in NXT UK so far is his clash with Ilja Dragunov from the 30th April "Hidden Gems" episode 2 weeks ago. It's not a touch on some of the matches I've mentioned earlier but I'd recommend giving it a look to see what he can achieve in the shackles of WWE's format and production.

I don't believe A-Kid has the same levels of contractual restrictions than some of the other NXT UK guys so I hope that over the next few years we get to see him do exciting things all over the independent world whilst still having access to the mostly NXT only guys like Dunne, Bate, and WALTER.

I'm also sorry that rather than this being a verbose study of A-Kid's character and style, it is more a show and tell piece pointing you to his matches. However, I think A-Kid is one of those guys who is best seen than described. The Appendix of the matches referenced above is right below this so get stuck in asap.

You won't regret it.
