Entrance songs play a vital role in helping build a wrestler’s character, whether it’s The Undertaker’s music, which sets the ominous mood the show wants portrayed, or Hulk Hogan’s music, where the song literally explains what the wrestler is fighting for - but which are our favourites?
ROSS CASEY - LIKE A PRAYER
I know that it is a bit of a cop out to pick copyrighted music - when there are so many Jim Johnston classics to choose from - but have you ever been at a show when Grado comes out to Madonna's Like A Prayer?
The room fills with joy and then joins as one singing the lyrics to a song that both made and probably killed Grado's career. Thanks a lot for not agreeing to let him use it in America, Madge. BOO.
Simply watch the above and tell me you aren't jealous that you weren't part of it.
JCH - KEITH LEE
As much as Assman is an absolute banger and was the best wrestling theme tune for about 15 years, it was overtaken by a standout on the British Independent Scene in 2017/2018.
This man recorded his own theme and I paid him $5 for a download code on twitter for it and listened to it repeatedly so I would be able to perform it to a high standard when he was on his way to the ring.
I am of course talking about - Keith Lee.
The man of the hour. King of The Ring, Intelligence and Power. The best vs the Greatest. He'll make you famous, One spirit bomb and your whole live changes. Bask in my glory, you all know the story, started on the football field and wanted more, see the full contact made me react...
SSS16 2018 was a high point as he made the semi-finals and I got to sing this on multiple occasions. I miss this tune. Absolute banger.
SHAFI - REAL AMERICAN
"That's my second favourite song... All rest are tied."
Bobby Heenan may not have been a fan of 'Real American' but this is one occasion when The Brain was wrong.
I am not American and the idea of patriotism in general I find to be a baffling concept (you have no control over where you're born so why would you be proud of it?). This song should make me as nauseous as most 'Land of the Free' propaganda does and yet it avoids that by being an absolute BANGER.
The first retail WWF VHS I ever owned was "Hulk Hogan's Greatest Matches". I don't recall it being my first choice but it was the cheapest in the supermarket and when my uncle said "Take it or leave it" there was only going to be one outcome. I was four years old and I was about to take a crash course in Hulkamania.
I cherished that video and took it everywhere with me. When my parents went to the hospital for my sister's birth I stayed with family friends and they packed me off with it because they new it would keep me quiet as I watched it over and over.
This VHS meant that one of the first wrestling matches I ever watched was Hogan vs Andre. What a classic! Hulk was a larger than life hero and his entrance music was so rousing.
Is there anything more heroic than taking a stand, fighting for the rights of everyone and being a man? Whilst many from the period will argue that these qualities were rarely displayed by Terry Bollea, they were in ample supply for Hulk Hogan.
The "Immortal" one made me LOVE America and I wanted to move there when I was a child. He proper MAGA'd me.
The great thing about this song is it's really upbeat and gets you pumped as Hulk was power walking to the ring to dispatch the monster of the month and defy the odds once again. You knew business was about to pick up when the the first few notes hit.
The brilliance of this song is it also worked great at the end of Hulk's matches as he posed following another victory. When he ripped the referee shirt from Sid at Summerslam '91 and made him pose with him as Real American blasted out I was stood in my living room flexing my guns too.
I just wasn't strong enough to rip my shirt - which probably saved wrestling from getting banned in my house..
Hogan is the biggest star wrestling has ever known and having the best song ever massively helped his presentation. I'm sure some of my colleagues will pick something 'cooler' or funnier but nothing will touch 'Real American'.
Go and listen to it on Youtube and if it doesn't stick in your head for the rest of the day then you're a waste of both prayers and vitamins.
