205 LIVE RECAP (09/01/2019)

Writer's picture: WSBFWSBF

G’day lads and welcome back to another issue of Wrestling Should be Fun’s longest running, weekly, episodic television review article for a show that is not on television and has numbers in its title.

Dom Van Dam here, finally recovered from his Pro Wrestling EVE hangover from the weekend; don’t forget to head on over to @wrestlingshouldbefun on Instagram to see all the highlights.

(This week’s issue once again brought to you by the group’s Insta. Try it yourself, I’m a subscriber and I can just about tolerate watching the stories back as I sober up.)

Previously on the 205 Live Review:

Last week we discovered our first 2 qualifiers to challenge “Air Bud” Murphy at the Royal Rumble with the masked villain from Mexico; Kalisto, and the baby-faced assassin; Tozawa, both winning their qualifying matches. Tonight we eagerly await the foreshadowed “lesson in respect” from Hideo Itami to Cedric Alexander in our main event.

NOAM DAR v TONY NESE

The premier athlete is out to meet the Scottish Supernova and Nese notably is not carrying his protein shaker cup this week. That’s a real shame because how will people in his workplace know he goes to the gym if he isn’t constantly sipping water out of it in the office?

I just had a cracking promo idea. Every time Nese cuts a promo (like the split screen one seen here) he should hold the protein shaker cup up high, cheers the camera on his phone and take a swig at the end rather than trying to manufacture a catchphrase.

I got the idea from @Domvandam over at the @wrestlingshouldbefun Instagram page. (Once again, this week’s issue brought to you by @Wrestlingshouldbefun on instagram, which makes this article the only wrestling related content online not sponsored by Blue Chew.)

Now let’s get back to ringside...

The narrative here is one of unfinished business for Dar who hasn’t really got the wheels rolling properly since his return. (There’s only one way to fix that; subtitle his promos.) Nese is dominant early doors with his clear power advantage.

The Daft Destroyer’s only real offense comes in the form of strikes and Nese actually buries him from an athletic standpoint as well as power. Someday they will find him, underneath a landslide, in a champagne supernova in the sky. It’s just a real shame about Nese’s sloppy rig (1) or he might actually draw some money.

Nese is absolutely eating Dar up here like a crunchy box and a 2L IRN BRU which, if you know your booking, would suggest a surprise win for Dar is on the horizon…

Literally 7 seconds after writing that Dar gets the roll up and pinning combination for the W.

Promo Pourri

THE BRIAN KENDRICK

Tozawa is on assignment in Japan “honing his skills” so he can return to challenge “Air Bud World Pup” for the Cruiswerwight Title. This leaves us with Kendrick reading a letter on behalf of the Silver-Tongued Strong Stylist whilst he is over at Fight Club Pro in Tokyo.

After reading the letter, which actually tickled the sides of this viewer, Kendrick ends up reminding us all that “he tortured Tozawa,” so now he will “do everything in his power to make sure Tozawa becomes champion.”

Spanky stares right down the barrel of the camera as he delivers this final line and shows us his unblinking, un-phased baby blues. The use of the hyperbole “everything in his power,” combined with the steely stare foreshadows foul play from Kendrick at the Rumble.

There is still a villain who loves to “torture people,” inside that head of his. The question is; would Tozawa agree that Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair if it resulted in a title victory?

DREW GULAK & JACK GALLAGHER

Up next are Team Alliteration, backstage with GM Maverick and they are providing him with “lists” of wrestlers that he can hire in the Worldwide Talent scout of 2019.

Gulak excitedly promises that some of the wrestlers (don’t know how he gets away with that every week) “wouldn’t climb to the top rope even if the floor was hot lava.” Ha!

MARIA & MIKE KANELLIS

Mike and Maria are next in Drake’s office talking about their displeasure at the “New additions” to the roster for the New Year. This juxtaposes Gulak and Gallagher’s ideas of stacking the roster in their favour.

Mike and Maria are pulling against the supposed signings because there already isn’t enough time for them on the show. Fair point really.

LIO RUSH

Coors Light is our final orator for PP this week. Rush is surly about the finish last week when The Lucha Heel Party used a numbers advantage and outside distraction to get the chocolates.

I suggest Lio finds himself a Raph or a Mikey before coming after vengeance.

HIDEO ITAMI v CEDRIC ALEXANDER

Nigel McGuinness on commentary early on in this one believes it is a lack of aggression which has cost the former Kenta (who apparently Mcguinness has had dealings with in the past, who knew?) in his 205 Live career to date. This, to me, suggests a hard hitting match ahead and probably a victory for Itami.

We get a fairly traditional sort of WWE outing here with babyface shine, outside interference leading to Heel Heat and then the athletic finishing stretch. Itami actually wins cleanly enough to book his ticket to the Rumble and leaves the C.A. Wrestle Factory questioning, where he goes from here?

The show closes this week with The Cotton Bud issuing an open challenge for next week to anyone who meets the weight requirements on another show. I wonder whether we might see Tyler Breeze complete the open challenge trifecta of NXT, Raw and 205 within the space of a month?

I guess there’s only one way to find out; see you next week lads!
